The G1 license is the first stage in Ontario’s graduated licensing system for new drivers. To obtain a G1 license, an individual must pass a written knowledge test on traffic signs, laws, and safe driving practices.

The G1 license is the first stage in Ontario’s graduated licensing system for new drivers. To obtain a G1 license, an individual must pass a written knowledge test on traffic signs, laws, and safe driving practices. With a G1 license, the driver is restricted from driving on 400-series highways and must be accompanied by a fully licensed driver at all times. After holding a G1 license for a minimum of 12 months and passing an on-road driving test, a G1 license holder can apply for a G2 license.
